Rose & Grants

Updated: Feb 7, 2023

Here I paid a visit to a cafe in the Trongate area of Glasgow, Rose, and Grants. Originally this unique beautiful local independent café was made in the boom of the commonwealth games with other businesses, but through original ideas like plant-based food, it has managed to outlive many surrounding businesses. It is the home of the famous vegan square sausage. The square sausage is a Scottish staple and after a backpacking trip to Australia from a former manager, the vegan square sausage came to life. It is a mostly plant-based menu. With 70% of its menu catering towards vegans. The kitchen manager Danielle was lovely enough to sit down for a chat and talk about this unique place. She explained how all the food is handmade and the ingredients are locally sourced. She detailed how all the staff that work there are mostly vegan with each member getting a say in menu ideas. They offer students an excellent discount with other special offers throughout the morning. Their Instagram ‘Roseandgrants’ is a place to find out their soup of the day before even getting there.

The plan is to eventually go 100% plant-based with an increase in vegan customers every year.

The variety is splendid with options ranging from a pretzel brownie to scrambled vegan eggs. Danielle was shocked to find that I hadn't tried the eggs on the menu so was quick to change this. Originally, I had planned to go to the gym but was too full after this trip.

Even better was that Danielle said that customers are welcome to bring their own ideas and that if there was anything they miss or still crave but are trying to eat more sustainably, they would try to ‘veganise’ it for them.

This was a trip to research about Glasgow and how local businesses are trying to help with being more sustainable. Working in partnership with other local businesses like GlasVegan was inspiring how to see that even though a rival in trying to entice customers, they work in partnership with promoting each other.

The interview ended pleasantly and before I left, I had a terrific coffee, with only alternative milk offered from soya, almond and oat. They didn’t charge me, but I felt compelled to leave a tip after hosting me so well. It really was like being at someone's house. A study by Student Beans revealed that Glasgow was named one of the top UK cities for accommodating Vegans, and you can see why.

Here are some recent articles about Rose and Grants in popular papers.
